Why join Mock Trial?
Mock Trial is among the most successful organizations at Loyola University. For twenty-two years, head coach Michael Walsh and hundreds of students have built Loyola Mock Trial into a perennial national contender. But our goal is not only to be good at mock trial – we hope that every competitor that enters our program will leave as a better person. Loyola Mock Trial is created by culture, and we compete at the top level nation-wide while having fun and teaching our members skills that will last a lifetime.
Who can join the team?
Anyone! Loyola Mock Trial is open to all undergraduate students. You don't have to be a previous mocker to join our team. You don’t even have to know what mock trial is. Some of our best mockers – including three All-Americans – joined the team with no prior experience. Many of our alumni have attended top law schools, including Yale, New York University, Columbia, Stanford, Michigan, and Northwestern. Other alumni have gone on to become scientists, teachers, authors, political operatives, and medical doctors.

Mock Trial will teach you...
How to Think.
Mock trial requires mastery of seemingly hundreds of moving elements in order to win. From the more complicated aspects like writing openings and closings that could change based on the other team's witness calls, to making different case theories to respond to all possible opponents' theories, and the potentially mundane like keeping track of time, mock trial will make you think more and faster than you ever have before.
How to Act.
Mock trial cases have multiple witness that provide countless opportunities for fun characters. Lately cases have included police officers, criminals, bug doctors, politicians, reporters, and movie stars. Attorneys can also get into the "act," because mock trial is truly about putting on a performance. An attorney, just like an actor playing a witness, is always being watched and judged on their speaking, movements, and facial expressions. Acting and mock trial, therefore, go hand in hand.
How to Persuade.
What separates great mock trial teams from average ones is that they provide judges an experience that's better than the other team's. It includes presentation, substance, and everything in between. Mock trial will teach you how to manage all those aspects and how to create an overall presentation - from hand gestures to word choice to how to properly address the court - that will serve you in any career path you choose.
How to be part of a team.
It's more than a cliche: mock trial will give you friends for life. Loyola Mock Trial has less than 30 total members, and each team has between 6-10 people. You will be spending hours of practice time with these people each week, plus most of your weekends at tournaments. Like a family, sure you'll have your rough patches from time to time, but Loyola Mock Trial emphasizes the values of respect and inclusiveness.
How to commit.
We won't mince words: mock trial is a serious time commitment. The season starts in the first weeks of the school year, and the National Championship is held in April after two rounds of qualifying. Plan on practicing at least 6 hours a week during the fall, and 9 hours a week during the spring. It's a long, sometimes grueling season, but it's worth it for those who have the passion for competition and the commitment to teammates to stick it out.

Mock Trial will also give you...
Travel.
Lots of it. The program competes in multiple invitational tournaments each year, plus regionals and the national qualifier tournaments. These include trips to New York, D.C., North Carolina, Kentucky, and Michigan. Every team will get at least three hotel trips, and maybe more. If you love seeing different parts of the country and competing against schools from coast to coast, mock trial is for you.
Trophies.
Lots of them. Loyola Mock Trial is a perennial championship contender. We've qualified for the National Tournaments eighteen straight years. First year competitors have been integral in our championship competition teams - every team of ours to compete at the championship has included at least one first year competitor. The future relies on new talent. Will you be next?
